How to switch between cut and loop on the AK-DUO
Hello.
My name is Chris and I am the manager of RUGMATAG, a tufting specialty store in Osaka .
We often receive inquiries like this from people who use the standard or custom AK-DUO models.
"I bought the AK-DUO, but I can't switch from cut to loop..."
"When I went back from looping to cutting, the yarn stopped breaking."
"I thought I adjusted it, but I can't hit it properly."
AK-DUO Cut & Loop Pile Tufting Gun (¥38,500)
AK-DUO Custom model cut and loop pile tufting gun (¥42,000)
The AK-DUO is a convenient gun that can both cut and loop with one device , but if you don't know how to switch between them, you may not be able to use it properly.
In this article,
We will explain in detail how to switch between cut and loop .
*Please refrain from performing this adjustment with tufting guns other than the AK-DUO, as it may cause malfunctions.
First, important points to note (please be sure to follow):
When switching, be sure to turn off the power.

・Unplug the power cord
・Make sure the gun is completely stationary
For safety, be sure to follow this rule.
A simple explanation of how AK-DUO works:
The AK-DUO determines whether it will "cut" or "loop" depending on how open the scissors are .
・Scissors open → Loop

・Scissors closed → Cut
In other words,
It all depends on how tightly you close the scissors.

Step 1: Loosen the hex screws
- Use the included hex wrench to turn the hex screw on the top of the gun counterclockwise slightly (about half a turn).
Be careful not to loosen it too much, as parts may come off easily!
Step 2 : Turn the gear to adjust the position

- Turn the gear and, with the scissors still open , align it to the top (apex) position.
Step 3: Tighten the hex screws securely

Once the position is determined, tighten the hex screw clockwise .
This completes the loop setup .
Once you've set it up, try turning the gear to check it.
If the scissors stay open and move downwards when they reach the top , then you've adjusted it correctly!

Step 1: Loosen the hex screws
- As with cut → loop, loosen the hex screw counterclockwise by about half a turn .
Step 2 : Turn the gear to align it
- Turn the gear and adjust it so that the scissors are at the top .
Step 3: Close the scissors with your fingers to adjust
- Lightly close the scissors with your fingers to adjust the tightness .
This is the most important point.
Step 4: Tighten the hex screws securely
Once you have adjusted the closure, tighten the hex screw clockwise until it is securely closed .
What is "proper closure"?
Do not close the scissors too tightly or too open .
Ideal state
・Does not close completely
・There is about 1mm of room
This "state with a little space" is
The yarn is cut cleanly and the weave is stable.
Common mistakes and causes
Mistake 1: I set it to cut pile, but the yarn didn't cut.

Cause: The scissors may be open too far.

→ Try readjusting it while keeping in mind the 1mm margin .
Mistake 2: I set it to loop pile, but it ended up cutting in places.

Cause: The pincers may not be able to stay fully open when they reach the apex, and may close slightly.

→ When adjusting the scissors , leave them fully open and tighten the hex screw firmly at the top (vertex) position.
Summary: Switch slowly and carefully
Switching between AK-DUOs is not a difficult task.
・Don't forget to turn off the power
・Do not loosen the screws too much
・Pay attention to how tightly the scissors are closed.
Just by being aware of these three things, you will make fewer mistakes!
If you think something is wrong, don't panic and try checking again from the beginning.
