(Updated on December 2, 2025)

Hello, we are RUGMATAG, a tufting specialist store .

"Tufting" is a hot topic on social media.

In fact, it's a craft that you can start today without any special skills .

"What tools do I need?"

"Can I do this at home?"

"How do you make it in the first place?"

To solve all the questions of beginners,

The entire process of preparation, tools, and production has been clearly organized .

I hope this can be a guide for you as you begin tufting.

*If you are still unclear about "What is tufting?", please click here.

Tufting is actually very simple

The tufting process is just six steps .

① Stretch the fabric over the frame

②Draw a design on the fabric

③ Punch the yarn with a tufting gun

④ Apply adhesive to the back

⑤ Dry thoroughly

⑥Finish the back and front and it's done!

Even if it's your first time, if you follow the steps in order,

It's a fun craft project where you can turn your own drawings into fluffy rugs .

Several tufted chair rugs are lined up on the floor, scattered with various shapes and colorful designs, including stars, flowers, tulips, and geometric patterns.

Before you begin, prepare the environment

Tufting can also be done at home.

Before you get started, there are four things you should check:

1. Noise issue (similar to the volume of a hair dryer)

RUGMATAG's tufting gun is approximately 80dB .

Most people are surprised that it's quieter than they expected .

Daytime → No problems in most environments

Nighttime/early morning: It is recommended to avoid apartment buildings.

②Work space

What you need is

Space to set up the frame

・Projector throw distance

・A place to store yarn and tools

・An environment where it is okay for yarn scraps to fly around

You can easily work in a room of 6 to 8 tatami mats.

3. All you need is a stand to secure the frame.

Rug making process

STEP 1 | Stretch the fabric

If the fabric is loose, the finished product will be distorted, so the trick is to make sure it is taut. The base fabric is stretched and fixed onto the wooden frame.

STEP 2 | Draw the design

Either of the following is OK

・Transfer using a projector

・Draw directly freehand A star-shaped design is sketched on the base fabric using a ruler and pen.

* Don't forget to draw it in reverse !

STEP 3 | Knit the yarn

This is the most fun part of tufting. A yellow star-shaped rug is being tufted in with a tufting gun. Three tips:

・Press firmly

- Align the needle with the direction of travel

- Move the gun at a constant speed

STEP 4 | Glue → Lining

Apply glue to prevent the yarn from coming loose and then attach the lining. White glue is applied evenly to the back of the star-shaped rug with a spatula.

STEP 5 | Dry thoroughly

Half a day to two days depending on size and season .

STEP 6 | Finishing

Cut it out of the frame and smooth the surface with clippers to create a one-of-a-kind original rug! The excess base fabric on the back of the flower-shaped tufting rug is being cut off with scissors. The light blue floral rug is cut flat with clippers.
