How does it change with and without stirring? Comparing how to use tufting adhesives
Hello, we are RUGMATAG, a tufting workshop and equipment/materials store in Osaka.
Adhesive is essential for finishing rugs.
Did you know that the final result can vary greatly depending on how you use it ?
How to use adhesive (RADITEX/anti-mite)
Here are some frequently asked questions from customers:
"What happens when you stir (whisk) it?"
"Is it okay to use it as is?"
In conclusion, you can use it either with or without stirring!
However, whether or not you lather it will make a big difference in the ease of application, finish, and cost-effectiveness.
This time, we used Rugma Tag's popular adhesive (mite-proof) to compare two patterns: with and without stirring!
Validation Conditions

Artwork size: approx. 25cm x 25cm
Adhesive used: Tufting backing (rug adhesive) with anti-mite ingredients (200g each, no stirring/stirring)
Other conditions: all the same
No stirring (use as is)

The advantage is that it's easy to prepare and can be applied immediately!
However, when it is in liquid form, it does not spread well and it takes some effort to apply it evenly . Therefore, speed is important when spreading it.
However, it can produce a beautiful finish for smaller pieces.
The great thing about this is that it doesn't require a mixer and is easy to prepare and clean up .
Stirred (use by whisking)
The adhesive is whipped by incorporating air into it using a mixer, making it fluffy, light, and easy to spread evenly.

Lathering creates a thick layer on the surface, making it easier to adhere to the lining (mesh).
It takes a little bit of effort to set up and clean up, but considering how efficient it is, it's actually so convenient that it actually saves you time!

Differences between usage and cost performance
|
No stirring |
Approximately 130g used |
Approximately 70g remaining |
High usage volume and heavy finish |
|
With stirring |
Approximately 77g used |
Approximately 123g remaining |
A small amount provides full coverage! Lightweight and economical |

No lathering: 130g consumption (70g remaining out of 200g)

With lather: 77g consumption (123g remaining out of 200g)
By lathering the adhesive, it expands by 2 to 3 times its size, reducing the amount used by approximately 40% !
It is also recommended for those who value cost performance.
Comparison of finish after drying

No stirring

・It is slightly hard and bounces back when rolled up.
・Firm texture and thick finish
- Anti-slip effect is modest

Weight: Approx. 150g
With stirring

・Soft and light finish
・Rubber-like elasticity and flexibility
-Highly slip-resistant and adheres well to the floor

Weight: Approx. 120g
Summary of the benefits of foaming
✔ Reduce usage and save money
✔ Easy to apply evenly, improving work efficiency
✔ Increased anti-slip effect
✔ Light and soft finish
Tips for using without lathering
- Be sure to apply quickly and evenly
・A slightly hard and heavy finish
- Anti-slip effect is modest
It can be used without stirring,
If you want a balance of lightness, softness, non-slip properties, and cost-effectiveness, we recommend the "stirred" option!
Recommended usage amount (60cm x 60cm)
|
conditions |
Recommended amount of use |
|
With stirring |
Approximately 400-450g |
|
No stirring |
Approximately 700-750g |
Even if the size is the same, the one with stirring (whisking) function will allow you to use significantly less, produce a lighter finish, and provide better anti-slip properties.
Conclusion
Whether or not you lather the adhesive makes a huge difference in how it feels to use and how the finished product turns out.
・For those who prioritize ease of preparation and cleanup → No stirring
・For those who prioritize cost-effectiveness/anti-slip properties → Stirring
Depending on the size and purpose of the work,
Try out the method that works best for you!
