Vantan Design Institute x RUGMATAG
Hello.
We are RUGMATAG, a tufting specialty store in Osaka.
Recently, as a new initiative for RUGMATAG, we held a special workshop for students with the cooperation of Vantan Design Institute.
This was an opportunity for third-year Skateboard & Design students to experience tufting and learn about rug making.
We will bring you photos of the event.
From design to production
In this class, the students created rugs that were perfect for skateboards on the day, based on designs they had thought up in class at school.
Many of the designs had a street feel that is unique to the skateboarding department, and each piece clearly expressed the individuality of each student!
The finished rug has rubber sewn onto the back so that it can be attached to a skateboard.
It is a unique piece that can be enjoyed however you like, whether you want to display it or sit on it!
Serious expressions and the enjoyment of crafting
During the production, everyone took the tufting very seriously, exchanging questions and working carefully.
Everyone was so smooth and skilled that it was hard to believe it was their first time.
As expected from skaters who express themselves using their bodies on a daily basis, their excellent sense was put to good use in the tufting!
After the project was completed, we received feedback such as "It was fun!" and "I'd like to make more," which made us very happy.
Connection with education and the future
I was very happy that the students were able to experience tufting through this workshop, and I feel that there is potential for it to expand in the future.
We would be delighted if this experience leads to new expressions and ideas.
We would like to continue working with Vantan Design Institute to convey the appeal of tufting to students through special classes such as workshops.
