[Let's try making something with tufting! #10] How to make a simple pot cover

Hello!
My name is Chris Kurisu, and I am the manager of RUGMATAG, a tufting specialty store in Osaka .

This time, we will show you how to make a pot cover using tufting.

At the end of this article, there is a YouTube video that shows the entire process, so be sure to read to the end!

"I want to make something other than rugs."
"I'm not sure what to do next."

A pot cover would be perfect for your next project!

A pot cover made of tufting joined with hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro) is wrapped around the pot and the finished product is checked. It fastens with hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro), making it easy to put on and take off.

Specifications of the pot cover we will make this time

The pot I used is size 8 .

Preparation for production involves measuring the diameter of the pot with a tape measure and checking the size of the tufting pot cover. Circumference: Approximately 77.5 cm

Height: Approx. 24.5cm

We will make it to this size.

Materials used and specifications

・Amount used: Approximately 570g

Finished size: approx. 77.5cm x 24.5cm

・Gun used: AK-1 (10mm/16mm)

*In order to create a difference in height for this design, guns with two different pile lengths were used.

What you need

The basic set including the frame, gun, cloth, and glue can be anything you normally use for tufting.

Additional items

・Velcro (15cm x 2 sets)

・Needle and thread (for sewing)

① Prepare a design to fit the pot size

First, measure the size of the pot and prepare a design that matches it.

A design diagram for a pot cover made using tufting. The continuous band-like pattern of the knitting is expressed in line art. This time we used a "knit-style" design, but feel free to customize the pattern and color scheme to your liking.

As long as the size is right, you can make it in any design you like.

② Transcription and typing

The design is transferred using a projector and then typed in.

Up to this point, you can simply follow the same steps as when making a regular rug.

3. Create a margin for the hook-and-loop fastener

Once the stitching is complete, leave some space to attach the hook-and-loop fastener .

This is the finishing preparation process for a tufting piece, where the margins that will later become the joints are marked with a pencil. This is the finishing preparation process for a tufting piece, where the margins that will later become the joints are marked with a pencil. It's a good idea to mark the margins on one side of your work with a pencil.

This will be the joining part later.

④ Adhesive → Lining mesh

Apply the adhesive to an area slightly larger than the piece.

・Paint the margins a little over the top

・Apply thoroughly to the edges

Then apply the lining mesh on top and then add another layer of adhesive.

This is the process of attaching a mesh lining to the back of the tufting piece, which has been coated with adhesive. This time we will be cutting the edges, so be especially careful when finishing them.

⑤ Dry for 24 hours → Cut off

Let it dry for 24 hours before cutting.

⑥ Surface finishing (hair clippers and carving)

After drying, smooth the surface with clippers.

As part of the surface finishing process for tufting rugs, the pile is trimmed with a carpet trimmer while the lint is sucked up with a dust collector. This time, there is a difference in elevation, so the boundary between 10mm and 16mm was finished by carving.

⑦ Sew on the hook and loop fastener

Finally, sew the hook-and-loop fastener to the excess area.
