[Verification] Size of rugs that can be made with 200g of soft acrylic yarn and comparison of mixed color weaves

Added August 15, 2025

Hello! We are RUGMATAG, a tufting studio and shop in Osaka that runs tufting workshops and specializes in tufting equipment and materials . In this article, we'll be introducing soft acrylic yarn, which is recommended for tufting beginners. We also tested how many rugs can be made with one cone, so please read to the end.

What is soft acrylic yarn?

A cone of yellow soft acrylic yarn sits on a table, with the ends of the yarn splayed out in front of it. The yarn is made up of eight thin strands twisted together, emphasizing its soft texture.

Soft acrylic yarn, as its name suggests, is characterized by its soft texture. It is made up of eight thin strands twisted together, and when woven, it spreads out softly.

    Comparison of single-cylinder and double-cylinder

Soft acrylic is inexpensive and is recommended for yarns made in one or two strands, making it easy to prepare and especially recommended for beginners.
I would like to try casting one line at a time and compare how much difference there is in how the line appears on the surface when using one line and two lines.

    In the case of single-piece

A cone of yellow soft acrylic yarn sits on a wooden yarn stand with the yarn coming out from the top.

If you use a single roll, you can use it as is without having to rewind it, making preparation easy.

I'll try placing one vertically on the cone and hammering it in.

A close-up of the yellow yarn woven vertically into the white fabric, highlighting the delicate tufting.

If you use just one, one line will create this much volume.

Even one strand is enough volume.

      In the case of two-piece

Next to the yellow cone set on the thread stand is a ball of thread that has been rewound with the same thread, allowing the condition of the two types of thread to be compared.

We make one ball using a ball winding machine and then hammer in two strands.

When using two strands, either rewind them using a ball winder or use two cones standing upright.

Two rows of yellow yarn are woven into the white fabric. On the left is a mixed color tufting sample, and on the right is a crimson rug.

Compared to single strands, this method gives each line more volume.

It is easy to create dense material, which also shortens production time.

For larger pieces, it is easier to work with two strands.

Check out the size of the rug you can make with one cone!

To answer the question, " How big a rug can you make with one cone (approximately 200g) of soft acrylic yarn? ", we actually conducted a test.

      Verification condition 1

      • Yarn : Soft acrylic yarn 200g (weight of yarn only)
      • How to use : Take one piece
      • Gun : AK-1 cut pile
      • Pile length : approx. 16mm
      • Interval between stitches: 2 threads

Continue weaving until you run out of 200g of yarn per cone.

A worker uses a tufting gun to tuft a crimson rug into white fabric, while shelves of colorful yarns line the background.

      result

      Measure the finished size.

A tape measure is placed along the length of a rug to measure its length, while cones of thread are neatly lined up on a shelf in the background.

      The vertical length is 35cm

A tape measure is placed next to the finished crimson rug to measure its dimensions.

The horizontal length is 30.7 cm

I continued to hammer until I ran out of yarn. 35cm x I was able to hit a size of 30.7cm !

A crimson rug sits on a white chair, and in the background, a variety of colors—blue, green, pink—are displayed on shelves, creating a visually striking effect.
Deep red soft acrylic yarn and simple rugs made from it are displayed. The rugs are square and the texture of the yarn is clearly visible.

      Verification condition 2

      • Yarn : Soft acrylic yarn 200g (weight of yarn only)
      • How to use : Take two pieces
      • Gun : AK-1 cut pile
      • Pile length : approx. 16mm
      • Interval between stitches: 3 threads

With double-strand lacing, the volume per line increases compared to single-strand lacing, and the surface density tends to be denser.

Therefore, to achieve a finished product closer to that of a single piece, the intervals between the stitches are set wider than when using a single piece.

I divided one cone of yarn into two using a yarn winder and started winding! I continued winding until I used up 200g of yarn.

      result

      Measure the finished size.

        Height 39.5cm (driving surface only)

        Width 30.7cm

I kept knitting until I ran out of yarn, and ended up with a size of 39.5cm x 30.7cm !

        Two verification results
The two-piece method allowed us to drill a larger area than the single-piece method.
The reason for this is thought to be that by increasing the intervals between shots, a wider area could be covered with the same amount of shot.

The amount consumed will vary depending on how you shoot and the gun you use, so please use this as a guide only.

        Mix color input

The mixed colors of soft acrylic yarn are perfect for adding a unique accent to your projects.

Let's see how the MIX colors appear on the surface when applied in various patterns!

A cone of mixed brown, gray, and beige yarn is placed on a table. The yarn is loosely pulled out of the cone, revealing an intertwining of strands of various colors. The composition clearly shows the texture and color of the yarn.

The color we will be using this time is BRMX57, a three-color mix.

        In the case of single-piece

This tufted sample comes in a mix of beige, brown, and gray. The zigzag pattern creates a fluffy texture. It is woven onto a white base fabric.

A diagonal pattern appeared on the surface.

It seems that when the timing of the color change is right, a pattern like this can appear.

When using two strands and matching the initial colors of both strands

"MIX colored yarn being held up by hand. In the background, a framed tufting sample is displayed, with beige, brown, and gray yarns being pulled out.

The hammering is done with the initial color aligned.

A tufting sample in a mix of beige, brown, and gray. It features a curved pattern and densely woven threads, giving it a soft texture.

The resulting pattern is larger and more diagonal than when made from a single strand.

When using two strands and shifting the initial color of both strands

A mixed-color yarn is being pulled with both hands. In the background, a beige and brown mixed-color tufting sample and a crimson rug are displayed, clearly demonstrating the tension and color of the yarn.

The first color is shifted when the stamping is performed.

This sample is also tufted in three colors: beige, brown, and gray. There is a darker area in the center, and the overall pattern is random.

It came out in a completely different color.

Three different tufting designs are displayed on a gray floor. The samples are a mix of black and beige, and you can see how the different patterns are woven.

Even though I used the same yarn, the results were completely different depending on how I wove it.

The appearance of mixed colors varies depending on the type of color you choose, the initial color you start with, and the size, so if you're interested in mixed colors, try out different methods of mixing to find your favorite look!
