How to finish the surface of tufted lugs

Hello. We are Tufting studio & shop RUGMATAG, a tufting workshop and equipment/materials specialty store in Osaka.

This time, I've put together a summary of how to finish the surface of a rug made using a tufting gun after the yarn has been tufted.

There are various finishing methods, but this time we will introduce a finishing method using a carpet trimmer and rug scissors.

Finishing with a carpet trimmer

Basic usage

Do this on a flat surface.

If the rug is curled, it will be difficult to straighten it evenly.

A trimmer with distinctive blue and orange grips is being used on a colorful rug.

Do not press too hard and move the blade parallel to the lug.

The key here is to not try to cut all at once, but to cut a little at a time.

Carpet Trimmer Guide

If you finish the surface using only clippers, it will inevitably end up with unevenness and it will be difficult to achieve an even finish.

By attaching the carpet trimmer guide sold in our store, anyone can easily smooth the surface evenly.

When installing, make sure the blade is parallel to the ground.

Attach the trimmer to the guide and gently press down while cutting.

Cutting from different directions will give you a neater finish.

A trimmer guide will save you time when finishing and will also improve the quality.

Edge processing

After smoothing the surface, smooth the edges.

Hold the clippers at an angle and trim the corners of the rug's edges in small increments.

If you trim too much, the fabric will become visible, so be careful and trim a little at a time.

Treating the surface makes the design stand out more clearly and gives the product a higher quality appearance.

By applying the trimmer, you can also create a three-dimensional effect on the rug like this.

You can use it in this way to make the boundaries between colors clearer or to create texture.

Finishing with scissors

Two pairs of scissors rest on a pink and orange tufting rug: the left pair has a yellow handle and curved blade, the right pair has a blue handle and straight blade.

There are two types of scissors available in our store.

It is easier to finish small pieces with scissors.

The teeth are rounded and wide, and are designed to cut horizontally.

The straight blade is ideal for creating borders and neatly trimming edges of designs.
