Types and preparation of rug adhesive
Hello. We are Tufting studio & shop RUGMATAG, a tufting workshop and equipment/materials specialist store in Morinomiya, Osaka .
This time , we will introduce in detail how to choose the adhesive to use when finishing the back side and the necessary preparations when using it. We hope this will be helpful for those who have questions such as "How should I choose it?" and "What do I need to prepare?"
Adhesive Type
Glue is needed to attach the base fabric, yarn, and lining.
We carry two types of rug adhesives in our store, and we have summarized the features of each. These two types are actually used by rug companies that are professionals in the field.
・RADITEX (Glue for lining) *With anti-slip effect
This is an adhesive specially developed for tufting rugs by Miyoshi Mats Co., Ltd.
This adhesive was developed specifically for tufting rugs; it is a reliable adhesive that is actually used by Miyoshi Rugs in their products.
By stirring before use, the volume increases by 2 to 3 times, allowing you to reduce the amount used, it spreads better and becomes easier to apply, and it has the following benefits: improved anti-slip effect.
When used together with the lining mesh sold on this website , it allows for a raw cut finish, providing an anti-slip effect.
Highly recommended for making rugs to place on flooring etc.
・Backing agent for tufting (rug adhesive) *With anti-mite effect
This adhesive is also a product that is actually used by carpet companies.
It contains anti-mite ingredients, so it keeps mites away. *Proof-of-concept testing completed
Rugs finished using this adhesive are safe to use around children and pets.
It is also recommended for tufting projects intended for wall hanging or for long-term storage of rugs.
It goes well with the mesh and backing cloth we sell in our store.
*It has a slight anti-slip effect, but it is not as strong as Miyoshi Mat's RADITEX.
Preparation
When applying adhesive, work in a well-ventilated environment.
Since the adhesive is difficult to remove once it gets on your clothes, we recommend wearing clothes that you don't mind getting dirty or an apron.
When drying after application, keep the frame stretched and avoid direct sunlight, and dry in a well-ventilated place. If you are working at home, a covered balcony or a well-ventilated garage is recommended. It will take 1-2 days to dry in the summer and 2-3 days in the winter, so it's a good idea to check in advance whether you have space to dry it.
Next, we will introduce the items you need to prepare when using adhesive.
·mixer
Both of our adhesives need to be mixed before use.
We recommend using a hand mixer for the adhesive.
We use a tabletop mixer that can mix large quantities at once.
If you are producing a large number of rugs, we also recommend a tabletop mixer.
・Weight gauge
For a 60cm x 60cm rug, you will need about 400g to 500g. Be sure to prepare a measuring device that is appropriate for the amount you will be using.
Spatula
Prepare a plastic spatula to use when applying the paint. These can be purchased at hardware stores.
・Bowl or bucket
When stirred and used, the volume will expand by 2 to 3 times, so make sure to prepare a large container with plenty of room.
summary
The two types of adhesives we carry each have their own unique features.
We hope you will choose the adhesive that best suits your rug's purpose and the environment in which it will be used.
In the next blog I will explain how to use glue.
