How to use rug adhesive
Hello. We are Tufting studio & shop RUGMATAG, a tufting workshop and equipment/materials specialist store in Morinomiya, Osaka .
In the previous blog, we explained how to choose adhesives and the necessary preparations for use . This time, we will introduce in detail how to use rug adhesives. We hope this will be helpful for those who are wondering, "How do I use adhesives?" and "What should I be careful of?"
How to use
The adhesive RADITEX (glue for lining) and the backing agent for tufting (contains anti-mite ingredients) that we sell are both used in the same way, by stirring.
1) Put an amount of glue into a bowl or bucket that corresponds to the size of the rug you are making.
At our store, we use approximately 400 to 450g for a 60cm x 60cm rug.
② Mix the adhesive in a bowl or bucket with a mixer.
The volume will expand to 2 to 3 times its original size, so make sure to put it in something larger than it needs.
If you are using a small amount, stir for about 5 minutes, and if you are using a large amount, stir for about 10 minutes.
Stir thoroughly until the mixture becomes matte in texture.
④ Apply an appropriate amount to the striking surface.
When doing this, apply the paint to an area slightly larger than the area you applied.
⑤ Glue the lining, cut it larger than the piece.
This time we will use mesh.
Lightly press the mesh into the surface to avoid wrinkles, then use a spatula to move from the center to the outside to remove any wrinkles and adhere it to the surface.
⑥After smoothing out the wrinkles, add an appropriate amount of glue on top.
7. Apply adhesive thoroughly to the edges.
If you dry the fabric while there are gaps between the mesh and tufting cloth at the edges and then cut it, the fabric may fray.
Be sure to apply a generous amount around the edges to eliminate any gaps.
⑧ Use a spatula to spread it evenly.
9. Do a final check from the side to make sure there are no areas of the lining sticking out.
After application, the paint is left to dry for 1-2 days before moving on to the finishing process.
