Tufting technology, carefully taught from the basics

This is a two-day intensive course for beginners and experienced rug makers alike. In a small group setting (maximum two people), we will carefully teach you everything from the basics to advanced tufting. You will acquire the correct techniques and knowledge, and be able to smoothly start making rugs at home. For a fee of 44,000 yen (including materials and tools), you will acquire solid techniques through the practical production of two types of rugs.

Two-day curriculum

Day 1 (11:00-18:00) - Learning basic techniques

1. Tufting Basics
   • DIY frame structure and how to make it yourself
   • Differences and characteristics between craft yarn and rug yarn
   • How to choose and use acrylic and wool yarns
   • Types and characteristics of tufting cloth
   • Comparison of features of various tufting gun models (AK-1, AK-2, AK-DUO) and how to choose
   • How to maintain your gun and how to make it last longer
   • How to Choose the Right Rug Adhesive and Backing
2. Upholstery practice
   • How to maintain the correct tension
   • Techniques for even tensioning
   • Common mistakes and how to fix them
3. Design production and projector transfer
   • Efficient design production steps
   • The correct way to transfer images onto a projector
   • Important points to note when transferring images and tips to avoid mistakes
4. Tufting gun operation practice
   • Basic operations on AK-1
   • How to draw straight and curved lines
   • How to draw lines and tips for a beautiful finish
   • Differences in finish and effects depending on how the mesh is packed
5. Practical Production
   • Gradation technique using 5 strands of acrylic yarn
   • Lettering technique using two strands of wool yarn
6. Back surface treatment (backing)
   • How to properly apply adhesive
   • How to attach the lining material (mesh and lining cloth) according to its characteristics

Day 2 (11:00-15:00) - Mastering finishing techniques

1. Lining Finishing
   • A method of cutting and finishing mesh fabric that is efficient and suitable for rugs with complex shapes
   • How to create a durable finish using backing cloth and backing tape
2. Surface Finish
   • How to properly install and use the hair length adjustment guide (trimmer guide)
   • Techniques for creating uniform hair length
   • How to finish edges neatly with handheld clippers
3. How to create three-dimensional patterns (carving techniques)
   • How to carve patterns using special clippers
   • Techniques for creating a three-dimensional effect in rugs
4. How to care for your rug
   • Daily maintenance to ensure long life
   • Proper washing and drying methods

Production

Using the template designs provided by our store, you will be guided by our experts to create two original rugs:

1. Gradient Rug
   • Size: 35cm (semicircular)
   • Material: 5 strands of acrylic yarn for rugs
   • Features: Three-color gradation
   • Choose from 3 colors out of 60 available
2. Lettering Rug
   • Size: 25cm x 25cm (square)
   • Material: Wool rug yarn (2 strands)
   • Features: Three-dimensional finish of one alphabet or number
   • Choose from your favorite colors

After taking the master course, you can purchase the necessary equipment and materials at the shop on the 4th floor of our store. Our expert staff will help you choose the best items to suit your individual purposes and budget.

Event Information

• Location : RK Building 5F, 1-11-18 Morinomiya Chuo, Chuo-ku, Osaka
• Access : 3-4 minutes on foot from JR Morinomiya Station (North Exit) or Subway Morinomiya Station (Exit 7-A/B)
• Capacity : Maximum 2 people per day
• Frequency : Once or twice a month (depending on instructor and space availability)
  • The event schedule is published two months in advance at the end of each month.

  • Please arrive 5 minutes before the start

  • Light snacks (with low odor) are permitted during short breaks.
  • Please bring your own drinks
  • On the second day, we recommend wearing a mask as we will be trimming the fur.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing (the tufting gun weighs approximately 1.4 kg, so you may feel fatigued from light exercise)
  • You can take home the two rugs you made at the end of the second day.
  • Coupons are not applicable for second and subsequent workshops.

1. Select the first day of your desired date, make a reservation and make a payment
2. On the day, please come to the store 5 minutes before the start time (11:00)
3. First day of classes begins
4. The next day, the second day of class

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I participate alone?

A: Of course you can. In fact, many customers participate alone. Since the group size is limited to two people, you can also participate as a pair.

Q: Are there any breaks?

A: Depending on the progress, we will have several short breaks of about 5 to 10 minutes during which you can have a light snack (without a strong smell).

Q: Can I use my own tufting gun?

A: Yes, you can participate with your own equipment. Please bring it with you on the day. However, if there is a malfunction, we may ask you to use our equipment.

Q: What colors can I choose from?

A: This course uses two types of yarn: wool and acrylic. You can choose your favorite color from 48 colors for wool and 60 colors for acrylic.

Q: Can two or three people work together to create one rug?

A: Unfortunately, in order for this course to ensure you master the basics, you will need to complete all steps by yourself.

Q: What kind of rugs can you make?

A: Please choose your favorite colors from the design templates we have prepared and we will create two rugs. The first one is a gradation rug using 5 strands of acrylic yarn, and the second one is a lettering rug using 2 strands of wool yarn.
