How to finish backing cloth | 7 steps for a beautiful finish even for beginners
Hello!
My name is Chris and I am the manager of RUGMATAG, a tufting specialty store in Osaka.
"The backing cloth doesn't stick properly..."
How do I use backing tape?
We often receive consultations about such concerns.
This time, we will introduce how to finish the back side using backing cloth and backing tape , with easy-to-understand photos!
We will also introduce some tips that even beginners can use to avoid mistakes, so be sure to check it out until the end!
What is backing cloth?
A backing cloth is a lining (cloth) specifically used for rugs to cover and finish the back of the rug.
This item protects the punched part on the back and gives a neat appearance.
However, the backing cloth itself does not have any anti-slip properties.
Therefore, it is recommended for use in the following projects:
- Wall art, small items, and other artwork that cannot be placed on the floor

-Large and heavy rug that is non-slip
- Square or gently curved shapes (not suitable for complex rug shapes)

It is compatible with all three types of adhesives (mite-proof type/Raditex/Ecoshell) sold by RUGMATAG!
Backing cloth finishing procedure [7 steps]
Now let's take a look at how to actually finish it step by step!
Apply adhesive to the back

After you have finished stitching the rug, spread the glue on the backside, 3 to 5 cm wider than the piece .
point
- To ensure that the backing cloth adheres properly, leave a margin of at least 5cm all around when hammering it in!
â¡ Cover with backing cloth and stick it on

Cover the piece with backing cloth that has been cut larger than the piece.
There is no front or back.

Apply carefully, pulling from the edges to avoid wrinkles.
point
- Press firmly until the adhesive slightly oozes out to increase adhesion!
⢠Carefully glue the surrounding area as well

Gently adhere the tufting cloth and backing cloth together in the area where you applied the adhesive widely (leaving a margin of 3 to 5 cm).
â ïžCaution: If you press too hard, the adhesive may seep out onto the surface, so be careful not to apply too much force!
⣠Dry thoroughly

Once applied, allow to dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours .
Please note that drying time may vary depending on temperature, humidity, and type of adhesive.

If you lean the frame against the wall to dry, it's a good idea to secure it with nails to keep the wallpaper in place.
†Cut out the work
Once completely dry, cut the piece straight across, about 2cm larger than the edge.

This margin will be the area for wrapping.
point
ã»Use a 3cm wide piece of backing tape to check the cutting width and avoid mistakes.
⥠Fold back the edges and glue them

Fold the cut edge back and glue it on.

You can save time by using a glue gun.

If the wallpaper is firmly glued together at step 3, it will be integrated and the work will go smoothly.
⊠Finish with backing tape

Finally, use backing tape (sold separately) to cover the edges.
Here are some tips to make the finish look even better
ð¡ Summary : Make sure the side sewn with white thread is on the inside.

ã»Fold back the beginning part and prevent fraying

ã»If you cover the fabric right up to the edge where the yarn is woven in , it will look neater.

- Do not cut the corners, fold them back .

-Fold it over at the end to prevent fraying and you're done!

Conclusion
Backing cloth finishing may seem difficult at first glance, but if you follow each step carefully, anyone can achieve a beautiful finish.
In particular, for works to be sold or rugs to be given as precious gifts , the value of the work will increase dramatically if the back side is beautifully finished as well.
