[Must-see for beginners/creating the environment] Where to install a tufting frame and how to do so

(Updated on August 4, 2024)

Hello, we are Tufting studio & shop RUGMATAG, a tufting workshop and equipment/materials specialty store in Osaka .

When starting tufting, do you ever have trouble deciding where and how to set up the frame? Here we have put together a guide on how to set up a tufting frame.

Environmental conditions for installing the tufting frame

The frame can be completely fixed

The tufting gun is pressed into the fabric, so if it is not firmly fixed, the frame will move. Also, if the desk is light, it will move, so care must be taken.

The frame can be set at just the right height

It will affect your posture when you hit the ball, so make sure to place it at a comfortable height. Poor posture can cause back pain and have adverse effects on your body.

Keep out of reach of pets and children

If a tufting gun is accidentally dropped, even an adult could be injured.
Additionally, beating in the wool creates hair fluff, which can be inhaled by small children or pets, so it is best to do this in a separate room such as a workroom.

Will the noise from the work cause a nuisance to the neighbors?

The tufting gun makes a certain amount of noise while in use (around 80-90db, similar to a hair dryer). Please be mindful of the possibility of disturbing your neighbors. However, if you use it during the day, it should be fine even in an apartment.

The issue of location will need to be resolved by where you live or the studio you are renting, but finding a place that is "completely fixed" and "just the right height" can be surprisingly difficult.

How to fully secure the frame?

There are several ways to completely secure the tufting frame (so that it won't move): by placing it on a desk that is fixed to the floor, by placing the frame against a wall, or by using a weighted desk.

Recommended desks for home tufting

It's hard to find heavy desks.
Even if they are on sale, they are often quite expensive.
It's rare to find a home with a desk that is fixed to the floor. Also, placing a desk close to the wall can cause layout issues and vibrations to the wall.

That's why we recommend a desk with a height-adjustable function.
Desks with height adjustment functions have become popular recently, and are generally useful desks that can be adjusted to your own sitting height to make remote work from home more comfortable, or to prevent you from sitting for long periods of time by working on your computer while standing.
In fact, this desk with a height-adjustable function is very suitable as a desk on which to install the frame for home tufting.

First of all, they are quite heavy. It depends on the item, but many desks with height adjustment functions are very heavy, either to ensure stability or because of the machinery attached to them.
This makes it easier to stabilize the tufting frame when tufting.
It also has a lifting function so you can adjust the height as you like.
Of course, you want to adjust the club to your height, but depending on where you're hitting the ball, it may still be difficult to hit even if you adjust it to your height.
It is very easy to lower the desk when hitting the upper part and raise it when hitting the lower part. The Alebert electric standing desk was actually used and found to be very easy to use at RUGMATAG.
It's cheaper than other height-adjustable desks and has a solid weight, so I recommend it.

summary

This time we introduced how to set up a tufting frame. Creating an environment suitable for tufting can be quite difficult, but once you have it, try making your own perfect rug.
